The United Way of Danville-Pittsylvania County has partnered with Danville and Pittsylvania County School’s Virginia Preschool Initiative to bring the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to Danville and Pittsylvania County. Through this book gifting program, more than 1,900 children from birth to 5 years have received an age-appropriate, high-quality book each month at no cost to the family. Reading aloud to young children has been shown to set the stage for school readiness and promotes emergent literacy and language development, while giving them an early awareness of the art of reading.

In an effort to address some basic needs of more than 200 Danville students, in 2019 the United Way and Danville Public Schools partnered to develop The Transition Stop. Located in unused classrooms on the Langston School Campus, the program provides free clothes, school supplies and personal hygiene items to students identified through the McKinney-Vento Act as not having a fixed regular and adequate night time residence or who are deemed unaccompanied homeless youth. Washer and dryer facilities are also available. Supplies for the Transition Stop are obtained through regular “Drives” that focus on specific items needed. Transition Stop donation boxes are placed throughout the community and at the United Way office and are marked with items currently needed by the program.
